Dr. Spitz’s Continuing Commitment to Dental Health Advocacy

As Dr. Steven Spitz assumes the role of President of the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS), he will reinforce the MDS’s position as an advocate for the importance of dental healthcare for all Massachusetts residents. Advocacy can be defined as “actions taken to drive organizational, social, or policy changes on behalf of specific goals, often related to the health and welfare of specific groups or populations.” – Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

The Importance of Advocacy

Advocacy plays a critical role in advancing dental healthcare by influencing public policy, promoting oral health awareness, and improving access to care. Dr. Spitz is an advocate on both a personal level by donating his time and services to others and through organizations like the Massachusetts Dental Society, which works to shape legislation that affects everything from insurance coverage and Medicaid reimbursement rates to funding for community oral health programs. By engaging in these activities, Dr. Spitz contributes to the improvement of dental healthcare across all communities.

Dr. Spitz’s Personal Advocacy

Dr. Spitz has consistently taken a strong stance in advocating for improved access to dental care for those who would otherwise be unable to receive the care they need. Over the years, he has personally provided dental care to underserved communities through outreach programs and Smileboston’s dedication to welcoming those from marginalized or neglected communities.

Dr. Spitz and Smileboston welcome members of the LGBTQ+ community, who often have unique dental health issues stemming from HRT therapy, HIV, and lack of access to dentists who are compassionate and accepting.

Through the Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Oral Health Program, Dr. Spitz provides free care, ranging from dental cleanings to dentures and dental implants to Holocaust survivors. Remembering those who have lost so much and making their senior years more comfortable is a highly personal form of advocacy for Dr. Spitz.

Advocacy Through the MDS

As the incoming President of the Massachusetts Dental Society, Dr. Spitz is dedicated to continuing the many advocacy programs established and maintained by the MDS and its members. Working together, its members are stronger and have a greater voice. Dr. Spitz believes that the MDS serves several functions beyond supporting its members, including:

  • Being a voice for oral health in Massachusetts
  • Responding to underserved populations
  • Advancing legislation to promote dental care equity

A recent win in advocacy that will improve the lives and dental health of countless Massachusetts residents. Dr. Mo Rizkallah, the chair of Dental Benefits in the MDS, was instrumental in passing the Dental Insurance Reform law, which requires dental plans to utilize 83% of all patient premiums for patient care.

The Many Faces of Dental Health Advocacy

Dr. Spitz has been involved in various forms of dental care and patient advocacy throughout his career. His compassion for others and acknowledgment of the disparity between those who have access to care and those who do not drive him to devote a significant amount of his time and energy to advocating for those without a voice and limited resources. Among those programs are:

Mission of Mercy – Free dental care in Worcester for those in need, as well as matching them with dental care homes for continuing care.

Oral Healthcare Among Species Program at Zoo New England – Dental health is crucial for all species. Dr. Spitz is the on-call dentist for Zoo New England, where he has performed dental care on many animals, including tigers.

Bright Spirit Children’s Foundation – Children who are seriously ill recover faster and have improved outcomes if they experience a bit of joy. At the same time, in the hospital, Bright Spirit provides gaming systems and electronics to distract them, even if just for a while, from their illnesses.
