In our office, we often experience real issues with patients’ fear and anxiety associated with dental care. If this is you, know that you are not alone in dealing with dental anxiety or worrying about pain. We offer sedation for all dental treatments and Dr. Steven D. Spitz is the only prosthodontist in Brookline who offers sedation for restorative and cosmetic dental treatment in the office and not in a hospital. This is a benefit to those who have issues where they are nervous to be in a hospital and are looking for a comfortable, safe, and warm setting.

Every individual is different and that is why there are several options available to address and alleviate these concerns in our office. Discussing your concerns will allow you to choose the option that is right for you.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

  • Conscious Sedation, also referred to as oral sedation or “sleep dentistry”, is an option for many individuals and for most procedures. Medication is self-administered an hour prior to the appointment, and in some cases, again immediately before the procedure, through a small oral pill and creates feelings of relaxation. While sedated, the patient is relaxed, can answer simple questions, and follow directions. They are ‘awakened’ from ‘sleep’ with a simple juice box. Some patients may not remember their appointment and they surely will not remember any discomfort or fear. A good night of sleep is recommended following the procedure and a feeling of rest and relaxation can be expected in the morning. Individuals with a history of medication or alcohol abuse should consult their physician prior to using conscious sedation.
  • Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is mixed with oxygen, and administered through a breathing mask allowing individuals to be conscious and relaxed during their procedure. The individual is not asleep and is immediately ‘awake’ following a procedure. Note that we understand and can accommodate those individuals who do not want to be in an office that offers Nitrous Oxide, and we will schedule you on a day where it is not being used. By letting us know that this is an issue, we will add it to your patient information for future appointments.
  • IV Sedation is administered by anesthesiologist Dr. Patrick McCarty, in our facility. Individuals are comfortable and calm, drifting in and out of sleep. Again, most individuals have no memory of the procedure when it’s over.

Smileboston Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry has been using conscious sedation methods since 2004. Dr. Spitz is licensed by the state of Massachusetts to administer in-office conscious sedation and has completed training with the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, including annual Advanced Cardiac Life Support training. Smileboston is also part of the Sedation Dentistry Network – a group of dentists with specific training and licensure to treat individuals with moderate to severe issues with fear of dentists and dental treatment. Note that all procedures are completed in our office location and not in a hospital. This is a benefit to those who are looking for a comfortable, safe, and warm setting.
