What is Laser Dentistry?

This versatile tool allows dentists to cut teeth, bone and gum tissue with less trauma and to complete procedures that cannot be done with traditional dental tools. Laser dentistry is one of the most advanced dental treatments available today and Smileboston’s founder, Dr. Steven D. Spitz, was the first dentist in the United States to utilize a dental laser to assist in the placement of dental implants.

So what makes laser dentistry such an appealing choice? For one, the myriad of procedures that can be accomplished using a dental laser are virtually endless. Lasers allow procedures such as dental implant surgery, placing dental crowns, cleaning infection, frenectomy (fixing ‘tongue tied’ issues for adults and children), removing oral blisters or canker sores, and more, virtually painless. 

LAser Dentistry vs Drill Dentistry

Heat, vibration and pressure are the primary causes of pain associated with the use of the traditional dental drill. Since cutting both hard (teeth and bone) and soft tissues (gums) with the laser does not generate heat, vibration or pressure, many dental procedures are performed with less pain. There is a decreased need for anesthesia, lessened use of a dental drill, and recovery after your treatment is quicker. Additionally, when a laser is used for gum procedures, bleeding, swelling and post-operative pain are reduced, as is the need for pain medication. Taken together, we have found that the utilization of dental lasers ultimately reduces patient anxiety and provides a more comfortable and relaxing dental experience.
