General Dentistry

General dentistry refers to your primary dental care. This includes the diagnoses, treatment and management of your overall oral health care needs – gum care, fillings, crowns and preventative education.

Why is Oral Hygiene so Important?

A good oral hygiene routine is necessary to eliminate disease-causing bacteria in the mouth. Bacteria in the mouth builds to form plaque, a colorless film that sticks to teeth at the gum line. If plaque is not removed it can harden and lead to long-term ailments such as gingivitis or gum disease. While daily brushing and flossing keep plaque build-up to a minimum, a professional dental cleaning will remove dental tartar or calculus in places your toothbrush and floss have missed. That’s why your hygiene visits at Smileboston play such an important role in keeping your smile healthy.

Why Get a Dental Exam?

Dental exams provide an opportunity for the Smileboston team to discuss your current hygiene and provide suggestions to keep you healthy in the future. They also allow us to detect any risks and potential problems early on so they can be remediated quickly and easily.

How Often Should You Get a Dental Exam?

Dental exams should generally take place every six months. However, our patients in consultation with the Smileboston team, will decide how often exams are necessary. For example, some patients visit more frequently based on factors such as nicotine use, frequency of cavities and genetic susceptibility to tooth and root decay as well as gum disease.

What Can I Expect at Dental Exam?

During a typical dental exam, our registered dental hygienists will thoroughly clean your teeth, and remove any surface stains. Deposits called tartar or calculus are more difficult to remove than plaque and require the assistance of professional dental instruments. We will also check for signs of decay or gum disease. An X-ray may be performed to provide a more detailed summary of your oral health and to more closely identify any problems. We will ask you questions about your current methods of dental care, such as how often you brush your teeth, and floss, as well as whether you use a toothpaste with fluoride. With this information in mind, we will demonstrate proper dental care and provide suggestions on how to improve your habits to promote optimal oral health.
