What Is a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.

A Prosthodontist has received an additional 2-3 years of advanced training after completing dental school. This specialized training is completed through an ADA-accredited Prosthodontic Certification program, such as the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Here, Prosthodontists are trained in state-of-the-art techniques and procedures for treating multiple, diverse, and complex dental conditions, while restoring optimum function and esthetics to one’s smile. A Prosthodontist specializes in the diagnosis, restoration, and replacement of missing or damaged teeth and can restore oral function through the placement of restorations or prostheses (dentures, crowns, implants, etc.). Prosthodontics (also known as dental prosthetics or prosthetic dentistry) is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA).

Smileboston’s founder, Steven D. Spitz is a Prosthodontist and due to his specialized training, Dr. Spitz is called upon to work on more complex cases for those who are seeking truly optimal esthetic outcomes. His extensive training, use of lasers, concentration in occlusion, and vast experience gives him a unique understanding in restoring a healthy mouth and beautiful smile.
