Why is Oral Hygiene so Important to overall heath?

A good oral hygiene routine is necessary to eliminate disease-causing bacteria in the mouth. Bacteria in the mouth builds to form plaque, a colorless film that sticks to teeth at the gum line. If plaque is not removed it can harden and lead to long-term ailments such as gingivitis or gum disease. While daily brushing and flossing keep plaque build-up to a minimum, a professional dental cleaning will remove dental tartar or calculus in places your toothbrush and floss have missed. That’s why your hygiene visits at Smileboston play such an important role in keeping your smile, and your body, healthy.

What will happen at my dental cleaning?

During your hygiene appointment, our registered dental hygienists will thoroughly clean your teeth, and remove any surface stains. Deposits of tartar, or calculus, are more difficult to remove than plaque and require the assistance of professional dental instruments. Then the teeth are cleaned and polished with a flavored paste, leaving your mouth feeling refreshed. Following, we recommend a fluoride varnish to protect your teeth. during your visit, we will also check for signs of decay or gum disease. If you do not have recent x-rays, we will update them at your visit. X-rays are needed to provide  a more detailed summary of your oral health as well as a benchmark for the future, and to more closely identify any issues. With this information we are able to provide suggestions on how to improve your habits to promote optimal oral health.

Did you know that the plaque on your teeth is the same plaque that builds up in your arteries and can cause heart issues?

Why Get a Dental Exam?

Dental exams provide an opportunity for your hygienist and doctor to discuss your current hygiene health or issues and provide suggestions to keep you healthy long term. Exams also allow us to detect any risks and potential problems, such as cavities or oral cancer, early on so they can be remediated quickly and easily.

How Often Should You Get a Dental Exam?

Dental exams by your dentist should generally take place every six months along with your hygiene visit. However, your hygienist may decide, depending upon your dental health issues, that your hygiene care may be necessary more often. For example, some patients visit more frequently based on factors such as nicotine use, frequency of cavities and genetic susceptibility to tooth and root decay as well as gum disease. Frequency for those without any dental issues are generally every six months, however, for others, they may be recommenced monthly, every other month, every three months, or quarterly. Although your dental exam is not necessary that often, you can request to see the dentist at each visit.

What Can I Expect at Dental Exam?

Following your cleaning, the doctor will check with you for any issues you would like to discuss, and perform a visual “comprehensive exam” checking your teeth, gums and overall health in more detail.
